本田是做兩輪起家的,所以要從兩輪聊起
說起本田,本田宗一郎就是個技術控
二行程引擎在全世界唱秋的時候,本田宗一郎嫌二行程引擎就像竹子一樣沒有技術可言
(意思是沒有缸頭)
所以本田想搞出能媲美二行程動力的四行程引擎
因為四行程引擎轉兩圈才有一次動力輸出,跟二行程一圈一次動力,先天上就輸一大截
所以為了讓四行程引擎有足以跟二行程一拼的動力
高轉化是必需的過程,而本田也是最早發現多缸化是達到高轉化的有效方法
所以本田搞出了一堆小排氣量多缸引擎,雙缸125,四缸250等等
最大馬力輸出轉速動輒萬四萬五轉起跳(這數據以汽車來看很瘋狂,以機車來看也不常見)
與此同時,各車廠也發現,汽門越多,對引擎發展高轉也有極大的幫助
於是2氣門紛紛換成4氣門
又接著為了精準控制氣門啟閉,兩隻凸輪軸分別控制進、排氣門又比單凸輪軸要有利得多
於是各車廠又紛紛投入DOHC
DOHC除了氣門啟閉精準外,還有燃燒室形狀跟火星塞起燃位置有絕對優勢(比起SOHC)
但就在各車廠一頭往DOHC鑽研的時候(本田也有做DOHC)
本田宗一郎想想,DOHC並不是沒缺點,龐大的缸頭、多驅動一隻凸輪軸的動力耗損
有沒有辦法用單凸輪軸,同時保有單凸跟雙凸的優點?
於是在80年代,所有車廠都在朝DOHC發展的時候
本田硬是還要在SOHC上投入心力
開發出了兩顆直到今天還津津樂道的引擎(但都用在機車上)
一顆是RFVC (幅射狀四氣門),將凸輪軸上移,增加一隻從動搖臂,雖然氣門啟閉仍需透過
氣門搖臂來驅動,但燃燒室可以是理想的半球型 & 火星塞位置置中
這顆引擎共開發了三個排氣量尺吋,250、400 & 650
放的車款分別是FTR250/XR250、XR400/CB400SS & XR650
兼有單凸跟雙凸的優點,當年同級車動力名列前茅,耐用度又極佳
拿下好幾年的越野賽事冠軍
除了這一顆引擎以外,同樣是SOHC,本田也開發出UniCam缸頭
放棄理想半球形燃燒室,將凸輪軸側置直驅進氣門,排氣門透過氣門搖臂驅動
偏置的凸輪軸讓出缸頭正上方的空間,於是火星塞如同DOHC般由正上方鎖固
得到最完美的點火位置,燃燒室呈淺碟狀,雖然以燃燒室形狀來說不如半球形理想
但有利於提高壓縮比
綜合來說又是一顆兼有單、雙凸優點的引擎
單缸250放在CRF250這台車上,競賽版本榨出40ps以上
(是單缸喔!現在單缸250引擎有25p就偷笑了)
回到Car板,本田Civic 8 使用的也是SOHC引擎,當時的動力輸出跟同級車相比還略勝一籌
節能性也比同級車佳。本田玩這麼多年的SOHC終究不是隨便混混的
至於那個什麼橢圓形活塞,離Car版太遠,就不提了
