Tesla is working on new battery that lasts 1 million miles to come out next
year, says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the automaker is working on a new battery pack
to come out next year which will last 1 million miles.

Elon Musk 說，Tesla 正在研發明年要推出的下一代電池組，其壽命有一百萬英里。

When talking about the economics of Tesla’s future fleet of robotaxis at the
Tesla Autonomy Event yesterday, Musk emphasized that the vehicles need to be
durable in order for the economics to work:

在昨天的Tesla Autonomy Day 活動中，Musk 談到Tesla 未來的robotaxi，他強調
車輛必須要夠耐用才能發揮經濟效益。

“The cars currently built are all designed for a million miles of operation.
The drive unit is design, tested, and validated for 1 million miles of
operation.”

現在我們建造的車輛都是為了能運行100萬英里而設計的。驅動單元經過設計、
測試、和驗證，可以運行100萬英里。

But the CEO admitted that the battery packs are not built to last 1 million
miles.

Just a week ago, Musk said that they built Model 3 to last as long as a
commercial truck, a million miles, and the battery modules should last
between 300,000 miles and 500,000 miles.

但他也承認，現在的電池組並不是為了能運行百萬英里所製造的。

就在一星期之前，Musk 說Model 3 的電池模組壽命應該介於30 ~ 50萬英里。

At the time, he also said that Tesla plans to provide battery module
replacements.

Now, Musk added that there’s a new Tesla battery pack coming that will last
as long as the rest of the vehicles:

“The new battery pack that is probably going to production next year is
designed explicitly for 1 million miles of operation.”

The CEO said that they are optimizing every aspect of the cars, including the
tires, in order to achieve minimal maintenance to create an “hyper-efficient
” electric robotaxi.

Musk 上星期說現在Model 3 的電池模組能夠運行30 ~ 50萬英里已經很驚人了，
現在他又說下一代的電池組可以運行100萬英里！

要增加電池組壽命不外乎有兩種方式，一種是直接提高電池的壽命，也就是將電
池的循環(cycle)數增加，另外一種是加大電池組，簡單的估算是若電池組變兩
倍大，那壽命到之前運行里程也會加倍。但後一種方式與Elon 的計劃相違背，
他在會議中有提到，未來的策略是提供比較小的電池組，關鍵是為了robotaxi
盡可能的提供更多車輛，所以應該不是用加大電池組的方式來提高運行里程。

那也就是說Tesla 可能已經找到方法來大幅度提高電池的循環次數，目前用在
Model 3上的2170電池循環次數大約是1500次，根據未證實的消息說，目前Tesla
已經能做到4000次，並且已經用在PowerWall 跟PowerPack 上了。
