Why F1's Kimi Raikkonen Is So Awesome
He’s nicknamed The Ice Man because ofhis ice-cool persona and the fact that
he’s so chilled out that he’s oftenknown to be fast asleep 15 minutes
before he has to be in the car on race day.
I must confess I had amassive smile on my face when Kimi Raikkonencrossed the
line to become the eighth differentwinner in this incredible season after a
dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Why was I smiling? Because althoughsports journalists must try to be as
impartial and unbiased as possible, Lotusjust happens to be my favorite
Formula 1 team and Raikkonen my favorite driver.I’ve gotten to know much of
the team’s hierarchy since their previousincarnation as Team Renault, but I
have long admired and been fascinated byRaikkonen, a most complex character.
I also used to own a Lotus Elise, anawesome car to drive!
This season, I have gone through greatlengths to try and unravel the
mysteries behind the machinery — just what makes an F1car go fast — and why
some teams are better suited tocertain circuits than others. But the man
behind the visor holds just as muchfascination as what makes their vehicles
tick, and, of course, it is he who isemployed to wring the maximum out of the
multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-artmachines.
One major complaint from both hardenedF1 gearheads and F1 newbies alike is
that there are no longer any characters inFormula 1. They all seem to follow
the same mold of PR-trained robots lackingpersonality.
Raikkonen seems somewhat different. Abreak from the norm. He’s nicknamed The
Ice Man becauseof his ice-cool persona and the fact that he’s so chilled out
that he’s oftenknown to be fast asleep 15 minutes before he has to be in the
car on race day.His nickname is also tattooed on his left forearm. By his own
admission, he hasvery little interest in any of the PR activities now imposed
on drivers due tothe demands of sponsors, and he does his very best to avoid
them or at leastlimit his responsibilities to just race weekends.
“I’ve always enjoyed the racing and thedriving; if I had a choice I wouldn’
t do all of the other side,” said Raikkonenin a rare mid-season magazine
interview.
His team boss, Eric Boullier, concurswith his opinion. “He doesn’t give a
damn about anything other than going fast. That’s all he’s interested in.
That is why he has this persona and people sayhe must be difficult to handle,
but he spends hours with the engineers — hisprimary focus is going quickly
and he doesn’t hassle himself with anythingelse.”
So if interviews with journalists aresuch a pain and a chore, then why do I
like him so much? The answer is that heis a character and one who makes me
laugh. Stories about his epic vodkaconsumption and partying are legendary.
Secondly, he really does appear to havea wicked sense of humor. Just type
"Raikkonen" into YouTube, andyou’ll get some brilliant clips of him doing
backflips off a boat, falling offa boat drunk and, my personal favorite,
"Raikkonen Kidnapped," ahilarious short film about the lengths to which a
team will go in order to havehim sign a contract.
Press conferences are alsoa delight, with Raikkonen often treating the usual
inane questions such as"Kimi, what’s it like to be back in Europe?"with
deserved distain. Perhaps I like Kimi so much because he’s the driver
Iempathize with the most. It’s been said I don’t suffer fools, have a
sarcastictone, a wicked sense of humor and have been known to like a drink or
five onoccasion.
